INSTITUTIONALISE

Monoprints on drafting film, paper and stitching

This project is a response to the child abuse scandal in the religious institutions.  It takes a critical view of the lies, corruption and abuse that has occurred and has been covered up over many years.  It is a complex layering of individual survivor's stories, revealing the contraditions inherent in their lives as they struggle to deal with the deep seated and often life-long ravages of abuse.

The subjects are drawn from both public and personal references, yet explore universal psychological themes of shame, guilt, religion and sexuality.  The principles of repetition in these portraits explore aspects of human frailty, each exposing a raw emotion to the viewer.  The resulting images are more concerned with highlighting the unique way in which abuse damages people and wounds their souls, as to a physical likeness.
